Geocache Monarch Tracking & Release Program

ABOUT GEOCACHING

Do you like hiking but you wish there was something to do? Do you wish there was more to it, like, more of a purpose, or a challenge that didn't involve a team or a lot of complicated rules? Well, there's a new game that's taking the nation by storm: Geocaching!

Geocaching is a kind of a treasure hunting game played with a GPS (global positioning satellites) unit. Locations of geocaches are recorded at www.geocaching.com. When you find the "treasure", the custom is to take something from it and to leave something behind. There's also a little notebook included, to leave a message. Here's my friend thinking what he's going to write.

A virtual migration

The Geocache Monarch Tracking & Release Program is a bit like the real monarch tracking done by Monarch Watch. Each one we release has its own unique serial number, on a sticker on its right hind wing. After logging and tagging, the Geocache Monarch is placed in somebody's geocache for someone else to find.   Monarch Watch's Real Tagging Program

Each Geocache monarch has a personal name. They carry with them an email address, and you can prove you actually met one by including its name and number. These paper lepidopterans can eventually make their way to Canada or Mexico by being picked up by Geocachers who leave them at another Geocache a bit further north each time.

If you fall in love with a Geocache Monarch and are having a hard time sending it on its way, remember that it was meant to fly free. Please let it go, so that it has a chance of making it to the Great White North. If you send a SASE to Dragon's Eye, I'll gladly send you an untagged but autographed one to keep you company forever.
